This national award is aimed at anyone needing to develop the underpinning knowledge of how to control the spread of infection in their workplace or home environment. This includes giving an increased understanding of the causes of infections, the conditions in which they thrive and the ways that they can be spread. It also covers suitable methods of cleaning and waste disposal that help prevent the spread of infection, along with the personal protective equipment they can use for their own safety.

Substance Misuse Course
level 1

Substance Misuse Awareness – Certified HABC

The Level 1 Award in Substance Misuse Awareness is aimed at anyone working across a variety of sectors, such as counselling, the health sector, sport and recreation or community work, looking for an introductory level qualification in substance misuse.

Subjects covered include types of substances misused, signs, symptoms and their effects, reasons people misuse substances, misleading signs and symptoms, effects on society and gaining support and advice.

Areas covered include the effect substance misuse has on society as a whole, as well as the physical effects drugs/alcohol have on the individual

Course duration: 4-6 hours depending on experience

  • The Chain of Survival
  • Basic life support
  • Emergency Action Plan
  • Resuscitation (CPR)
  • The Heart
  • Recognition of Angina and Heart Attack
  • Safety Considerations and accessories
  • Demonstration and practice of using an AED
  • Choking

On completion of CPR training, the candidate should be able to demonstrate resuscitation of an adult in cardiac arrest. This should be assessed during or at the end of the training, using a simulated incident and a resuscitation training manikin.
